The Teaching Assistant works with teachers following all established classroom practices and rules to ensure safe, secure, welcoming, fun-filled learning environments for Early Head Start/Head Start Children. The Teaching Assistant is required to be available between the hours of 7:30 a.m-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, to be on call and ready to come in as needed.  

Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Center Manager/ Lead Teacher or designee, provide coverage and/or support for teaching staff in the planning and implementation of age and developmentally appropriate curriculum for children, including daily open-ended activities to expand their competencies across developmental domains and carry out primary responsibilities of that position
  • Maintain appropriate teacher- child ratios
  • Ensure visual supervision of children in the classroom and outdoors at all times
  • Contribute to a safe, healthy, nurturing, and culturally relevant classroom environment for all children and families
  • Follow directions of Wu Yee’s Center Managers, lead, associate and resource teachers
  • Maintain timely communication with Wu Yee program staff
  • Share any important information that you observe with the Lead Teacher and Center Manager.
  • Refer any important family issues to the lead teacher and center manager. Please do not address the family with any concerns without a lead teacher or Center Manager present.
  • Assist in conducting adult initiated activities as indicated in the lesson plan
  • Act as support and resource during child initiated activities
  • Report/document child injuries 
  • Assist to set up the classroom environment as needed
  • Assist with clerical and cleaning duties as needed
  • Ensure that the children are signed in and out of the center using electronic attendance
  • Through communication to the Center Manager, Lead Teacher, or Associate Teacher ensure the  documentation of all significant contacts with families
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Teacher’s Aides will be assigned to work where needed and during their course of employment may need to work at other locations to meet program needs.

 

Education & Skills Requirements: 

  • 3 ECE/CDE  units of Early Childhood or Child Development and ability to achieve another 3 units within a 12 month period.
  • 3 months working with Children in a Licensed facility 
  • Ability to travel to all Wu Yee location and sites (12 SItes all in San Francisco) 
  • Demonstrated competence in supporting families.
  • Models good judgment and effective problem solving.
  • Experience working with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
  • Good communication, problem-solving, and priority setting skills as well as maintaining an overall positive and professional attitude.
  • Must be able to bend and lift 50 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits: 

  • Competitive salary starting at $28.00-$29.71/hour.
  • Regular staff at our high need locations are eligible to receive an additional $100 per pay period.
