Wu Yee Children’s Services is San Francisco’s largest head start and early head start provider.  A home-grown San Francisco nonprofit, founded in 1977 by working mothers in Chinatown seeking culturally centered childcare, Wu Yee now offers early care and education to thousands of low-income and non-English speaking children and families throughout the city. Over the decades, Wu Yee has pioneered an innovative, culturally sensitive approach to early care and education that is dramatically improving lifelong well-being for children born to families furthest from opportunity. Controller Job Summary:

The Controller reports to the CFO and will manage monthly closings. Compile, analyze and report accounting data for CFO and other users to make sound economic decisions. The controller will supervise a Payroll Specialist, Accounts Payable Accountant and Purchase Agent. 

Controller Primary Responsiblities

  • Assist CFO with daily activities of Wu Yee’s fiscal department for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including, but not limited to, internal and external monthly financial statements and annual audits and annual budgets.
  • Work with Accounting Managers and other fiscal team members to ensure timely month-end closing. Ensuring accurate accounting of revenue and expenses.
  • Work with external consultant on the ASC842 lease accounting.
  • Ensure contract and grant compliance with Wu Yee government funders and private foundations.
  • Reconcile quarterly donor reports with Wu Yee advancement team to ensure accuracy.
  • Be a key liaison in preparing annual audit materials and in corresponding with the auditors.
  • Work with the contracting Accounting Manager to reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly, including Contract Advances and Account Receivable accounts.
  • Work with budgeting Accounting Manager to perform monthly actual to budget forecasting and projections for all Wu Yee contracts.
  • Review and approve payroll files and 403b contributions.
  • Improve financial status by analyzing results, monitoring variances, identifying trends, recommending actions to the CFO.
  • Manage annual 403b pension plan and worker’s compensation audits.
  • Help with financial data associated with grant and contract applications.
  • Maintain accounting knowledge by attending educational workshops.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Experience/Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Three years of hands-on senior accounting experience with strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and accounting structure.
  • Knowledge of program fund and grant accounting. 
  • Prior experience working with nonprofit accounting software. 
  • Ability to leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills to effectively interface with senior management and staff.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to Wu Yee Children's Services' mission.
  • Comfortable partnering with staff and management, working with highly confidential data and being effective in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment.
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger and payroll.
  • Excellent Excel (vlookup, pivot table, match and index, etc.) skills.
  • Public or government accounting experience preferred.
  • Experiences in NetSuite preferred.
